Chapter 14

An End and A Beginning

"I think... I think we've got to stop."

Jameson's been bracing for it since their doomed affair began, and it still hurts, a hot knife between bone and sinew, as physical as it is emotional.

It's not exactly a surprise. The lines between them have been softening and changing and it was only a matter of time before Oliver got uncomfortable and called it off.

There's no way to keep Oliver from feeling the reaction in his body. They're pressed together and Jameson goes stiff and hot. Of all the emotions warring in him, it's anger rising to the surface, a wild, flailing feeling of this is unfair.

Of course it's unfair, and he knew that from the beginning. He was never going to end this, it was always going to be Oliver.

He told Oliver that on the day they decided to be boyfriends. Why doesn't he ever listen to himself?

The words he wants to say are full of things that he can never, ever let Oliver know. The tone of his voice will be thick with hurt.

There's no safe response, so he lets go of Oliver and rolls away, onto his back. He finds his reflection in the mirror, half a man. The other half of him is curled up on the other side of the bed, a little spoon without a big one.

The silence stretches, too fragile to break.

"I'm sorry." Oliver whispers and Jameson's body clenches with irrational anger. He should be sorry. All he's ever done is tear Jameson to the bone. Even Oliver's love flayed him, and he'll never understand the damage he's done.

"No, you're right. It's for the best." Jameson finds the words that are true without telling his truth.

"You know this is too much." For some reason Oliver is still trying to convince him of what they both know. "I mean... you know what I said the first time. No aftercare is aftercare. This is.... Well, it's not that. Not even close. I can't, Jameson. It's not – I'm not – " Oliver stops, maybe to spare Jameson his own truth.

How kind of him, Jameson thinks bitterly.

He's always loved a bitter drink but he's finally found one he absolutely hates. It's Oliver's too-gentle rejection.

"I know." Jameson sighs because what else can he do but agree?

There's another silence and Jameson waits for Oliver to break it again; he's certainly not going to.

"Can you... I mean, can you say something? What do you think?" Oliver asks like he hasn't already asked for everything Jameson has to give.

Oliver could have millions of dollars and Jameson could have a penny and he'd probably give it to this man.

So he's not going to deny him this, even if it costs everything. And it kind of does.

"I think we kinked too close to the sun." He jokes because that's the easiest way to do this for Oliver.

Oliver snorts. "Do you think Icarus was a Dom or a sub?"

"A Dom, for sure. We always want more than we should." Jameson answers honestly, when he shouldn't.
